Why ChatGPT Will Fail Your Assignment

By RaphaelJune 17, 2026For Students & Parents

ChatGPT can write a grammatically correct essay in thirty seconds. That is exactly the problem. Speed and surface correctness are not the same as academic quality, and most students find this out after the grade comes back.
University assignments are designed to assess specific things: your ability to apply a framework taught in class, your engagement with the set readings, your development of an argument over time. ChatGPT has not attended your lectures. It has not read your module handbook. It does not know your tutor's marking criteria, and it cannot replicate the intellectual development your course is trying to build.
The content ChatGPT produces is also factually unreliable. It generates plausible sounding information based on patterns in its training data, not verified facts. In 2023, a New York lawyer submitted a legal brief containing six citations to court cases that did not exist, all generated by ChatGPT. The lawyer faced sanctions. The same risk exists in academic writing. A fabricated statistic or a misattributed quote will cost you marks, and in some cases, trigger an academic misconduct review.
Beyond detection risk, there is a structural problem. ChatGPT writes generically. It does not take a position and defend it. It presents balanced overviews. Most university essay prompts require the opposite: a clear argument, supported by evidence, that directly answers the question. Generic writing scores in the lower grade bands regardless of how it was produced.
There is also the question of what happens at exam time. If your coursework was written by an AI and your exam answers reflect your actual knowledge, the gap is visible to examiners. Discrepancies between coursework and exam performance are one of the triggers universities use to investigate suspected AI misuse.
