How Universities Are Updating Their AI Policies in 2026

By RaphaelJune 17, 2026For Students & Parents

When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, most universities had no policy on AI generated content at all. By 2024, almost every major institution had introduced one. In 2026, those policies have matured significantly, and what was a gray area two years ago is now explicitly defined in most student handbooks.
The shift has moved in two directions simultaneously. Some universities have adopted permitted use frameworks, where students can use AI tools for specific tasks such as brainstorming, grammar checking, or literature searches, as long as they disclose it and the final analytical writing is their own. The University of Sydney and several UK Russell Group universities have moved toward this model, with disclosure requirements built into submission forms.
Other institutions have taken a harder line. Many medical, law, and engineering programs have banned AI use entirely in coursework, citing concerns about accuracy, professional competence development, and assessment integrity. In these programs, any AI detection flag can trigger a formal misconduct investigation.
The most significant 2025 and 2026 update across institutions is the introduction of AI use declarations. Students are now commonly required to submit a statement alongside their work confirming what tools they used and how. Signing this declaration falsely is treated as academic fraud, separate from and in addition to any detection based findings.
Viva voce examinations have also become more common. Some universities now call students in to discuss submitted work verbally, particularly when AI detection scores are elevated. If a student cannot explain or expand on what they submitted, that is treated as evidence of misconduct.
The practical advice is straightforward: read your institution's current policy before you submit anything, and treat the declaration form as seriously as you treat the assignment itself.
