How Turnitin Actually Detects AI Writing

By RaphaelJune 17, 2026For Students & Parents

Turnitin added AI detection to its platform in April 2023, and since then it has flagged millions of student submissions. Most students assume it works like plagiarism detection, comparing your text to a database. It does not. The AI detection system works differently, and understanding how it works explains why so many students get caught even when they try to avoid it.Turnitin uses a method called perplexity and burstiness analysis. Perplexity measures how predictable the word choices in a piece of writing are. AI models like ChatGPT tend to choose the most statistically likely next word in a sentence. Human writers do not write that way. A person writing under deadline pressure, fatigue, or genuine uncertainty produces text with more variation. Turnitin's model has been trained on large volumes of both human and AI text, so it picks up on this predictability pattern quickly.Burstiness refers to variation in sentence length and rhythm. Human writing naturally shifts between short punchy sentences and longer more developed ones. AI writing tends to produce sentences of similar length and structure throughout a document. That consistency is what the detector reads as a signal.Turnitin reports that its AI detection tool has a false positive rate of less than 1% at the 98% confidence threshold. That means when Turnitin flags a piece of writing as AI at high confidence, it is almost always correct. The tool currently detects writing generated by GPT-3, GPT-4, and similar large language models. It assigns a percentage score indicating how much of a submission appears to be AI generated. Many universities treat any score above 20% as grounds for investigation. What students often miss is that Turnitin does not need to find the exact output. It is not matching your text to a database of ChatGPT responses. It is reading the statistical fingerprint of how the text was constructed, which is much harder to hide than a copied sentence.Raphael works with students who want to understand and navigate AI policies correctly.
