How to Write Essays in English When It Is Your Second Language

By RaphaelJune 17, 2026For Students & Parents

Writing academic essays in English as a second language is one of the more demanding things a university will ask you to do. It requires language proficiency, academic writing knowledge, and subject understanding all at once. Most students are developing all three simultaneously, which is exhausting. The good news is that there is a practical process that makes it manageable.
Start by reading the question more than once. Non native speakers often misread essay questions by focusing on familiar vocabulary rather than the specific instruction. Words like evaluate, critique, compare, and discuss each require a different type of response. Getting this wrong affects the entire essay regardless of writing quality.
Plan your argument in your first language if it helps. There is no rule that your thinking must happen in English. Work out what you want to say, what evidence supports it, and how your argument develops. Then write in English from that plan. This separates the thinking work from the language work and makes both easier.
Write short, clear sentences when you are uncertain about grammar. Complex sentences with multiple clauses have more opportunities to go wrong. A clear, direct sentence that communicates your point accurately will always score better than a long, tangled one that obscures it.
Read your work aloud before submitting. Your ear will catch awkward phrasing that your eye skips over. If a sentence feels difficult to say, it will feel difficult for a reader too.
Build a vocabulary list specific to your subject area. Academic writing in economics uses different patterns from academic writing in psychology. Learning the conventions of your discipline specifically, rather than just general academic English, improves your writing faster.
