How to Adapt to a New University System in 30 Days

By RaphaelJune 17, 2026For Students & Parents

The first thirty days at a foreign university are disorienting for almost everyone. The pace is fast, the expectations are often implicit, and there is enormous social pressure to appear like you are handling it fine. A structured approach to those first weeks makes the difference between catching up later and starting strong.
In week one, your goal is orientation, not performance. Attend every introductory session your department offers, read your student handbook, and locate the key support services: the writing center, the international student office, and your personal tutor or academic advisor. Many students skip these sessions. The ones who attend start with information advantages that compound over the semester.
In week two, read the marking criteria for every module you are taking. These are usually published in the module handbook. Understanding what a first class answer looks like in each subject, before you write anything, gives you a target to aim for. Most students never read these criteria until they get a bad grade.
In week three, complete a practice piece of writing for at least one module, even if it is not required. Take it to the writing center or send it to a tutor. Getting feedback on your writing style before your first real submission costs nothing and tells you exactly what to work on.
By week four, establish a weekly study routine with fixed hours for reading, writing, and review. The students who build this structure in week four outperform those who improvise throughout the semester. Consistency matters more than intensity.
Thirty days of deliberate adjustment sets the foundation for the rest of your degree.
