Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Miami Heat in One of the Biggest Deals in NBA History

The NBA offseason just produced a trade that will be talked about for decades. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time MVP and 2021 NBA champion, has been traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal that closes the book on one of the greatest eras in Bucks history.
The Bucks are sending Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks including the No. 13 selection in Tuesday's draft, one pick swap, and one second-round pick.
Why Milwaukee Let Him Go
Antetokounmpo made clear he did not want to retire without a second championship. That became obvious when Damian Lillard tore his Achilles in the 2025 playoffs and the Bucks rebuilt around him again it never worked. Milwaukee finished 32-50, missing the postseason entirely for the first time in nine years. His final season was cut short by injuries, managing just 36 games while averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.
Miami Gets Their Superstar
The Heat have done this before Shaquille O'Neal in 2004, LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010, Jimmy Butler in 2019. Now Giannis joins that lineage. At 31, Miami believes he has several elite years remaining. Paired with Bam Adebayo, the Heat now boast one of the most intimidating defensive frontcourts in the league and instantly become the biggest threat to the defending champion New York Knicks in the East.
The Extension That Decides Everything
Antetokounmpo becomes eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million supermax extension on October 1, 2026. If no extension is signed, he could walk as an unrestricted free agent in 2027. Miami will move quickly to lock him in before that window opens.
